木原敏江氏の作品に『雪紅皇子』があります*1。所収作品は「雪紅皇子」、「水琴窟」、「上ゲ哥」の３作品であり、いずれも南朝最後の皇子となった自天王と忠義王を中心とした物語です。
南北朝の合一後、後亀山天皇以下南朝系の人々を中心とした南朝復活運動は、応仁の乱が終わる文明十年（1478）頃まで断続的に続きました。後亀山天皇の子孫である尊義王は「後南朝」を立て、その子・自天王と忠義王が跡を継ぎました*2。
“Yukikurenai-no-Miko” is one of the works by Toshie Kihara. It consists of ‘Yukikurenai-no-Miko‘, ‘Suikinkutsu’ and ‘ Ageuta‘. All three stories are about Jitenoh and Chugioh, the last princes of Nancho.
After the unification of Southern and Northern Dynasties in 1392, Emperor Go-Kameyama and others in Southern Dynasty, Nancho, tried to reestablish the dynasty. This movement lasted on and off up until the end of the Ohnin War in 1478. Songioh, one of the descendants of Emperor Go-Kameyama established ‘Go-Nancho Dynasty’ and it was succeeded by his sons Jitenoh and Chugioh.
川上村では、尊義王の御座所は三之公にあったとされます。自天王は上北山村の滝川寺を、忠義王は川上村神之谷をそれぞれ御座所とし、神璽を守っていたといわれています。長禄元年（1457）12月2日、嘉吉の乱によって滅ぼされた赤松家の遺臣がこれら御在所を襲撃、宮たちの首と神璽を持ち去りました。赤松氏の武士は、上北山村、川上村の郷民に追撃され、宮の首と神璽は取り戻されたと伝えられていますが、その後、神璽は東吉野村の武士・小川氏を経由して京都に戻されたとのことです。
In Kawakami villagers believed that Songioh resided in Sannoko. Others believed that Jitenoh lived in Ryusenji-temple, Kamikitayama Village, and that Chugioh lived in Kohnotani, Kawamaki Village. On December 2, 1457, remaining samurai of Akamatsu Clan after being wiped out in the War of Kakitsu attacked their residences and took with them the heads of the dead princes and the spiritual objects of worship. The villagers in Kamikitayama and Kawakami moved to take them back from the Akamatsu warriors and the spiritual objects were said to have returned to Kyoto via Higashi-Yoshino’s clan Ogawa.
川上村金剛寺では、自天王の遺品を御魂代として礼拝し、後南朝の朝賀の儀を引き継ぐ「朝拝式」が、毎年２月５日、自天王が即位した日とされる日に執り行われています*3。
Kongohji Temple in Kawakami Village holds ‘Chohaishiki’ on February 5 every year. It follows the Go-Nancho historic morning ceremony procedures and offers prayer to Jitenoh. February 5 is when Jitenoh was crowned.
木原敏江氏『雪紅皇子』には「いつか必ず南朝の栄華を取り戻してみせよう」と、吉野の隠れ里に住まう人々の「由緒正しい南朝の臣の誇り」が描かれています。自天王と忠義王の最期を迎えた後は「一の宮自天王と二の宮忠義王が愛した里は、その後も戦の荒廃をまぬがれ残された人びとの手でひっそりと･･･だが誇り高く続いていく」という言葉で締めくくられ、500年以上にわたり朝拝式を守り続けてきた川上村の方々の信念と誇りにもつながる想いが描かれています。
Kihara Toshie in her book “Yukikurenai-no-Miko” chose people in Yoshino’s hiding to say, ‘One day we will bring back the glory and prosperity of the Nancho Dynasty’. It shows the pride and determination of those who believe they are noble and have an honorable origin. When Jitenoh and Chugioh passed away, she chose to say, ‘the home lands that Jitenoh and Chugioh loved will remain as such thanks to the people who wished to stay quietly…but with pride’. This is in harmony with the pride and determination of the villagers in Kawakami who have honored the Chohaishiki ceremony for more than 500 years.
