毎年一月上旬に行われる「弓祝式」をご存知でしょうか。舞台となるのは、川上村・東川地区の運川寺・烏川神社・白山神社です。
‘Yumieshiki’ is held in early January every year in Unsenji Temple, Karasugawa Shrine and Hakusan Shrine, all in Unogawa District, Kawakami Village.
運川寺は、曹洞宗のお寺で、ご本尊は釈迦如来です。開山・開基は不明ですが、応永三（1396）年の創建とも伝えられています。
烏川神社（別名、十二社神社）は、運川寺境内から約40m隔てて隣接しています。勧請年月は不詳。境内社には大神宮・大蔵宮・住吉社・白山宮のほか、水神社・山の神社・金比羅宮があります*1。
Unsenji Temple belongs to Sohtoh Sect and its main image is Shakanyorai. No detail is available about the foundation, but it is said to have been built in 1396.
Karasugawa Shrine, otherwise known as Jyunisha Shrine, is only 40 meters away from Unsenji Temple. The foundation year is unknown. Inside the precinct of the shrine, there are Daijingu, Ohkuragu, Sumiyoshisha, and Hakusangu. Also found are Sui (water) jinnoyashiro, Yamano (mountain) kaminoyashiro and Kotohiragu.
白山神社は、運川寺と烏川神社のちょうど真ん中に位置しています。祭神は白山大権現。加賀白山権現の勧請と伝えられていますが、創建年月は未詳です。これらの寺社を舞台として行われる、神仏習合のちょっと不思議な儀式が「弓祝式」です。
Hakusan Shrine is situated just in the middle between Unsenji Temple and Karasugawa Shrine. The main image is Hakusan Daigongen. It is believed that Kaga Hakusangongen was transferred here but the foundation year was unknown.
‘Yumieshiki’ is a somewhat mystique ceremony that bases on both Buddhism and Shintoism and takes place in the temples and shrines named above.
「弓祝式」は、延喜年間（901～923年）に始まったといわれています*2。
Its beginning is said in the years 901-923.
今から1100年ほど前、川上村に突然悪魔がはびこったり、疫病が流行したりして、多くの人々が苦しんでいました。そこで、この山里に住む東弥惣が、日頃信仰していた「白山大権現」の神力にすがるべく、お祈りをしたことが始まりだといわれています。
東弥惣は、白山の向かいに三間四面の堂を築き、日夜、信心祈願を込めて祈りました。延喜二（902）年のことといわれています。そうして、延喜四（904）年正月九日の朝方、東弥惣は彼方に悪魔の化身を発見、「天佑神助のお陰」と、弓矢をもって、見事、悪魔を退治しました。
About 1100 years ago, Kawakami Village saw evil spirits and plagues which threatened its residents. Seeing the situation one villager named Higashiyasou started in 902 to pray to ‘Hakusandaigongen’ for clearance of the unwanted.
Higashiyasou built a hall (about 5.5 meters square) across from Hakusan and day and night offered prayers.
In the morning of January 9 in 904, he spotted an incarnation/embodiment of the evil spirit, thanking the god for his assistance and protection, managed to kill the evil with an arrow.
当日は、大雪だったとのこと。その大雪をものともせず、蓑笠をつけ、弓矢をもって、悪魔を退治した、勇敢な東弥惣の功をたたえて、村人は酒と雑煮でもてなしたといわれています。
The heavy snow was falling on the village, but it did not stop him. People in the village were happy and praised Higashiyasou for his bravery and sake and zouni were shared to commemorate the occasion.
その時、東弥惣は「悪魔は山の主である。今後も村に祟りをもたらすかもしれないから、毎年正月九日に、桑弓、蓬矢で東西南北、天地の間を射て、悪魔降伏を行うがいい」と悪魔降伏の神術を教えたとされています。 それから、一月九日が悪魔払いの祝いの日と定められました。東弥惣が伝授した古式によって、千破美の蓑笠をこしらえ、千破美の踊りをとり入れた桑弓、蓬矢の射込みの儀式を行い、最後に運川寺の僧侶が鬼の供養の読経をして引導を渡す、という儀式が続けられています。
Higashiyasou on this success suggested that the village should set the ninth day every year to ward off evil spirits with soukyu bows and houshi arrows, to every direction, i.e. east-west, north-south, and heaven-earth. The soukyu bow is made from mulberry trees and the houshi arrow made of Japanese mugwort.
Since then January 9 has been celebrated every year with the detail as instructed by Higashiyasou. To ward off evil spirit oni, arrows are shot. At the end of the ceremony Unsenji priests chant a sutra and say a requiem to oni.
この故事にちなみ、「弓祝式」では、毎年３名の男性が、運川寺境内から40m離れた烏川神社境内の的に向かって、弓矢を放ちます。新春を迎えた川上村の平安を祈る儀式です。
川上村は、2019年に村政施行130周年を迎え、盛大な記念式典も行われました。2020年は、川上村が新たに歴史を紡ぎだす一年ともいえます。新しい年を迎えた川上村の祈りの空間に、ぜひ足をお運びください。
As seen in the photos, present day Yumieshiki sees three village men in formal kimono and hakama shoot arrows from Unsenji Temple. The target is the Chinese character oni 鬼placed in Karasugawa Shrine, 40 meters away from the temple. The character represents an oni and by shooting it the oni is regarded expelled. The ceremony is conducted to wish peace without the plague from oni for its people.
Kawakami Village celebrated its 130th anniversary and held a memorial event in 2019. Its glory is believed to continue on to 2020 and years to come. You are cordially invited to share this solemn atmosphere in Kawakami.
