大正８（1919）年７月７日、日本初の乳酸菌飲料カルピスが発売されました。カルピスの産みの親は、三島海雲。明治時代、日本語教師として中国大陸に渡った三島は、モンゴルの遊牧民から乳製品を振る舞われました。その体験が、カルピスを生んだといいます*2。

On July 7, 1919 (Taisho 8) the first probiotic drink Karupisu appeared in shops. Its creator is Mishima Kaiun. He is quoted to have got an inspiration for Karupisu from his experience in Mongol. During the Meiji Period Mishima was a Japanese language teacher in the Continent of China. In his time there he had a chance to taste Mongolian dairy drink which was the base for Karupisu.*2。

三島の事業を後押ししたのが、「日本の山林王」と呼ばれた土倉庄三郎の子どもたちでした。なかでも、庄三郎の五男・土倉五郎や、四男・四郎との出会いは、三島の中国大陸での事業に大きな影響を与え、次男・龍治郎は、帰国後の三島の会社（カルピス株式会社の前身：ラクトー株式会社）設立を援助しました*3。なお、龍治郎の長男・冨士雄は、1970年からカルピス株式会社の社長に就任しています。

It was Shousaburou’s sons who supported Mishima’s Karupisu business. Dogura Shirou and Gorou influenced his business in the Chinese Continent and Ryujirou gave support to the founding of his company Rakutoh (then developed to Karupisu Co.). Ryujirou’s son Fujio became the president of Karupisu Co. from 1970.

斎藤茂吉（1882～1953）は、昭和５年に川上村を訪れています。現在地に遷座する以前の丹生川上神社上社に参拝し、これら二首を詠みました。風の音や、川のせせらぎ、流れる雲、境内の石群を詠み込み、夏の爽やかさと神社の神聖さが伝わってくるようです。

Saitoh Mokichi (1882-1953) visited Kawakami Village in 1930. He made these two waka poems when he was in Niukawakami Jinjya Kamisha. It was before the time of the shrine’s relocation. The poems use such expressions as the sound of breeze, the chattering of a stream, floating clouds, and the stones in the shrine to make us feel the freshness of summer and the divine power of the shrine.

丹生川上神社上社では、例年七月に、夏越大祓式・七夕燈籠祭が斎行されます。ザッと通り雨が降っても、神事の後には晴れ間が広がり、虹がかかる、とても神秘的なお社です*5。

At the Niukawakami Jinjya Kamisha in July every year Natsukoshi Ooharaishiki Ceremony and Tanabata Tourousai Festival are held. It seems the shrine has some mystic power. On those days even when there was a shower after the prayers it cleared beautifully and there was even a rainbow in the sky.*5

『南山踏雲録』は、幕末の志士であり、国学者・歌人でもあった伴林光平の獄中での書です。文久３（1863）年８月天誅組に加わった光平は、９月に平岡鳩平とともに熊野・上北山村方面から伯母峰峠を越えて、川上村・入之波に到着しました。その時の様子が記されています。

Nanzantouunroku was written by Tomobayashi Mitsuhira, a patriot, a scholar of Japanese classic and a poet in the end of Edo Period. In August 1863 (Bunkyu 3) he joined Tenchuugumi. By September he and Hiraoka Kyuuhei reached Shionoha in Kawakami Village, crossing Obamine Tohge Pass from Kumano Kamikitayama. He wrote:

一晩中、伯母峰峠の険しい山や崖を越えて、明け方、川上村の最果てである入之波の里に辿り着いた。村の果てというだけあり、つらいこの世からは遠く隔たっている。川向かいの山々は、薄く、濃く、色が変わって、美しい錦秋である。

Throughout the night we walked through steep mountains and cliffs and finally at dawn we reached Shionoha. Shionoha, known as the dead end of Kawakami Village, is truly so far away from the real world. The mountains across the river change colors, sometimes pale and sometimes deep, and awesomely beautiful.

このように入之波の美しい秋の情景が記される一方で、後に付された和歌では、「山かげの、短い萱、高い萱をも分け分けて、行けども通れそうな桟道すらない」と、峠を越える過酷さが詠み込まれています。

While the beauty of autumnal Shionoha was described, the waka poem that follows stresses the hardship in crossing the pass by saying, ‘we elbowed through so much pampas grass, short and tall, but there just wasn’t any path to go on’.
