Ikari

白洲正子は『かくれ里』所収「吉野の川上」の中で、谷崎潤一郎『吉野葛』を読んだときから「一度は川上村をたずねてみたいと思っていた」と述べています。「吉野の川上」は、丹生川上神社上社（現在地への遷座前）、井光、金剛寺を中心に、白洲正子が川上村を二日間かけて巡った記録です*2。
Shirasu Masako expressed her wish to visit Kawakami Village in ‘Yoshino no Kawakami’ (appears in Kakurezato). She wrote, ‘I‘ve been wanting to see Kawakami’, explaining that the thought started when she read Tanizaki’s Yoshinokuzu. ‘Yoshino no Kawakami’ is a record of her own 2-day trip to the village. The record includes the places such as the original Niukawakami Kamisha shrine, Ikari, and Kongouji Temple.*2
「神武天皇が尻尾の生えた人間に会った」話は、『古事記』中つ巻に記されています*3。神武天皇（『古事記』では「神倭伊波礼毘古命（かむやまといはれびこのみこと）」と呼ばれる）は、兄の五瀬命（いつせのみこと）と共に、日向の高千穂宮から瀬戸内海を東行して熊野にまわり、高木大神（たかぎのおほかみ）が遣わした八咫烏に導かれながら、吉野を進みます。一行の前には、在地の神々が次々と現れ、いずれも恭順の気持ちを表しました。この時、在地の神として現れたのが「井氷鹿」です。
The story of ‘Jinmu Tenno met a man with a tale’ appears in Kojiki, Nakatsumaki. Emperor Jinmu, known as Kamuyamatoiwarebikono Mikoto in Kojiki, along with his brother Itsuseno Mikoto was heading east from Takachiho in Hyuga. They crossed the Seto Inland Sea and reached Kumano and then Yoshino guided by Yaatakarasu, a sacred raven commonly known as Yatagarasu, which Takagino Ookami sent to assist them. On the way they met local gods who came to show their loyalty to Emperor Jinmu. Ihika was one of these local gods.
白洲正子が紹介する「井光」へは、「井氷鹿の井戸跡」の看板を目印に山の中へ進んでください。少し歩くと、直径約50m、中心部分の深さ約10mのきれいな円を描く窪地が現れます。鬱蒼と茂ったシダに覆われた大きな窪地の中では、まるで古代からそこにあるかのような巨岩が圧倒的な存在感を放っています。この、深くしずかな森の中で、神武天皇（神倭伊波礼毘古命）は井氷鹿と出会ったと川上村では伝えられています。
Those who wish to visit Ikari are recommended first to find the signboard ‘Remain of Ihika’s Well’ and then to walk into the forest from there. In a short distance there is a sunken circle about 50m in diameter and 10m in center depth. There stands an enormous rock as if it had been there for ages. Emperor Jinmu is said to have met Ihika in this quiet forest.
Genryuu no Hi, The Day for River Origin
11月16日は川上村の「源流の日」です。平成26（2014）年11月16日、川上村で天皇皇后両陛下（当時）の御臨席のもと、「第34回全国豊かな海づくり大会」の放流行事が行われたことを記念して定められました*4。
Kawakami Village celebrates November 16 as The Day for River Origin. It is because water from the mountains in Kawakami village eventually flows into the Yoshino River. In 2014 the village had the honor of the attendance by the Emperor and Empress to the releasing of fish event at ‘the 34th National Convention for Healthy Ocean’. The Day for River Origin was set to commemorate this honor.*4
大会の開催テーマは「ゆたかなる 森がはぐくむ 川と海」でした*5。「川上宣言」*6を掲げて、かけがえのない水と森を育てている川上村の取り組みに、私たちも改めて目を向けてみましょう。
The Convention’s main theme was ‘rivers and seas nurtured by rich forest’.*5 Prior to the convention in 1966 the village issued ‘Kawakami Declaration’ and has been making continuous efforts for protection of forest and water since then.
Mifune-no-Taki Waterfall
川上村・井光地区の「御船の滝」は、冬季の冷え込みによっては、氷瀑を楽しむことができます。凍った滝の様子は「文殊菩薩」のお姿をあらわしているともいわれ、知恵を授ける滝として伝えられているそうです*7。
Mifune no Taki is in Ikari Region in Kawakami. On extremely cold winter days it turns to an icefall. The frozen icy wall is by some people respected as ‘Monjyu Bosatsu’ and regarded as good for receiving wisdom.
滝の前に設置された看板には、次のような話が紹介されています。延喜年間（901～923）、観音寺（井光地区）の住職・明堂和尚が真言を唱えると、滝音に文殊菩薩のお声が重なって聞こえてきたとのこと。「虹に腰を掛ける佛の姿有り云々」という文章で説明は終わりますが、滝の中から文殊菩薩がお姿をあらわしたくなるほど、明堂和尚は徳の高い方だったのでしょうね。
The signboard there introduces a story. During Engi Period (901-923) there was Monk Myoudou. When he chanted, there also were the voice of Monjyu Bosatsu and overlapping waterfall sound. The board’s last sentence reads, ‘one can see Bosatsu seating on a rainbow…’ It makes us guess that Monk Myoudou was so worthy of respect that even Monjyu Bosatsu was urged to want to meet him.
